Let Me Show You How
It all starts with a personal pain as they say. For me it was the pain of not being able to button my trousers, always wearing baggy clothes to hide the thick spare tire but mainly looking like I was forever expecting. I tried to convince myself that I couldn't care less what people thought and just forget about it, and so pretended that my roll of belly fat did not bother me in the least. But how much longer was I going to disregard everything I knew and understood about healthier food choices and eating as the key to maintaining a healthier body weight or the alarmingly high body fat ratio measurements of my family?
So I began by taking a detailed inventory of my entire family's eating habits (the kind of foods and our cooking methods) and physical exercise and analysed each habit as pass or fail, using a list of common do's and don'ts for better health, while in a third column of the table I wrote down a new action to take. I kept doing this on paper until I knew I had created a fool proof action plan that consisted of small steps which my family and I could easily follow. I knew change does not happen overnight so I used substitute or replacement strategy to reduce objection and gain co-operation.
I also learned to use weekly meal plans that included what to eat on those days when cooking was too much work, to prevent us from snapping back into old habits. In a nutshell, all the food we brought home or consumed were subject to our careful scrutiny based on a healthy standard we set, e.g. fast food (pizza or burger) is allowed but only once a month. If all this sounds much regimented it probably is, but have you ever considered how fit and disciplined army personnel are? Fortunately the internet is such a wonderful resource for menu suggestions that we also found ourselves inspired to experiment with new recipes. There were also a few rules set around what foods we will no longer buy or ate, when we ate, and how we cooked our food.
In particular we also paid attention to our 'go to' foods whenever hunger pangs struck and learned to avoid them and instead stocked up with healthier or better alternatives and if there were foods that we didn't bear to deprive ourselves, we simply rationed them. After all our primary goal was to eat healthily so an occasional indulgence was allowable as long as we abide with the conditions for eating them. At the beginning stages be fully prepared to encounter some resistance and allow some time for everyone to get used to the changes, in fact if I were starting out again I would introduce changes one at a time rather than all at once which was what I did, just remember not to give up at the slightest sign of rebellion. I know that anyone can follow the same plan that I have described and be on track to lose weight and feel healthier fast.
